Why Reading Matters
Reading isn’t just about turning pages;
it’s about transforming your mind.
A good book can reframe your past experiences and provide fresh insights.
Think of it as updating the software in your brain, letting you process old data in new ways.
As Patrick O’Shaughnessy puts it, “Reading changes the past.” But to reap these benefits, you need to remember what you read.
Here are seven strategies to help you retain more from every book you read.
1. Quit More Books
Life's too short to read mediocre books. Start many, but only finish the best.
“Life is too short to not read the very best book you know of right now.”
2. Choose Books You Can Use Instantly
Select books that you can immediately apply to your life.
Practical application cements knowledge.
If a book’s content aligns with your current goals or challenges, you’ll have a stronger incentive to remember and use the material.
3. Create Searchable Notes
Keep notes on what you read, and store them in a searchable format. Whether it’s digital or physical, make sure you can easily find and revisit key points.
For digital notes, tools like Evernote are invaluable.
For physical notes, consider using Post-It Notes or index cards.
4. Combine Knowledge Trees
Imagine each book as a knowledge tree.
The main ideas form the trunk, and the details form the branches.
Link these branches with other knowledge trees you’ve cultivated.
Connecting new information with what you already know strengthens your understanding and retention.
5. Write a Short Summary
Challenge yourself to summarize each book in three sentences.
This exercise forces you to distill the essence of the book.
Use the Feynman Technique if you need more structure: explain the book as if to someone unfamiliar with it.
6. Surround the Topic
Don’t rely on a single book to form your understanding of a topic.
Read multiple books from different perspectives to build a more comprehensive and accurate view.
This approach helps you overcome personal biases and deepen your knowledge.
7. Read It Twice
Great books deserve multiple readings.
“Anything worth reading is not only worth reading twice, but worth reading again and again.”
Each read-through will reveal new insights, tailored to where you are in life at that moment.
Where to Go From Here
Knowledge compounds over time.
Commit to lifelong learning, and let each book build on the last.
