Here are the
7 best habits-building tips I’ve ever discovered…
1. The 2-Minute Version
For any new habit you’re trying to build, simplify it down into a version you can complete in 2 minutes
Try this:
If you want to start running, simply go outside and run for 2 minutes each day. Build the habit first, and scale up later.
2. Make it enjoyable
Newsflash: You're much more likely to stick with something if you don't hate doing it.
Try this:
For any new habit you're building, ask yourself "What would this look like if it were fun" and adjust accordingly.
3. Use “Watering Holes”
Set up habits at places you congregate daily (kitchen table, work desk, etc). These are your “watering holes"
Try this:
If you want to start taking a multivitamin daily, don't hide the bottle in a cupboard. instead put it on your work desk or bedside table
4. Habit Anchoring
Building a new habit is a lot easier when you "anchor" it to a habit that's already part of your daily routine.
Try this:
If you make coffee every day, you can build a reading habit by placing a book next to the coffee maker and reading one page each time the machine is running.
5. Focus on Keystone Habits
Keystone habits are big dominoes that when completed make other habits more likely to happen
Try this:
If you exercise consistently you're more likely to eat healthy. You're also less likely to engage in bad health habits like smoking.
6. 2-Way Friction
Minimize the friction for getting into a good habit, and maximize the friction for getting out of it.
Try this:
Low friction to start: commit to going to the gym once per week. High friction to quit: pay in advance to meet a personal trainer on those days.
7. Track your progress
When trying to form a new habit, it's crucial to monitor your progress. Being mindful and having tangible visual rewards can make a significant impact.
