Day 13 Self-Improvement Challenge!
Change Your Questions
Hey Ambitious,
Have you ever found yourself asking, “Why can’t I stay consistent?” or “Why can’t I reach my goals?”
I know I have.
These questions might seem helpful at first, but what if they’re actually holding you back?
Yesterday, we talked about the power of streaks and how they can keep you motivated. (If you missed it, you can catch up here and feel free to leave a comment.)
Today, let’s dive into how changing the questions you ask yourself can be the key to unlocking your success.
A Personal Story
I’ve asked myself those “why” questions more times than I can count.
“Why can’t I stay consistent with my self-improvement efforts?”
The problem with this line of questioning is that it often leads to self-blame.
It’s easy to fall into a negative spiral, thinking things like, “I’m just too lazy,” or “I didn’t have the energy.”
But what if there’s a better way to approach this?
Ask 'What' Instead of 'Why'
Instead of asking “why,” try reframing your question to focus on “what.” Here’s why it matters:'
Why' Questions Lead to Self-Blame: When you ask “why,” it’s easy to point the finger at yourself. This can feel discouraging and isn’t very productive.
'What' Questions Focus on Solutions: Asking “what” shifts your mindset to finding solutions. Instead of blaming yourself, you start thinking about what changes you can make to improve.
Examples of Reframed Questions: Instead of asking, “Why can’t I stay consistent?” try asking, “What conditions help me stay consistent?” or “What am I noticing that’s getting in the way of my progress?”
How to Implement This
Next time you find yourself struggling with consistency, pause and reframe your question:
Instead of “Why am I not hitting my goals?”, ask “What strategies can I use to get closer to my goals?”
Instead of “Why do I always procrastinate?”, ask “What can I do to reduce distractions and stay focused?”
This simple shift can lead to more actionable answers like, “I need a quiet environment,” or “I should put my phone away an hour before bed.”
