It's strange, isn't it.
How much perspective matters.
We don't think about it often, but we should.

The Finnish are often voted the happiest people in the world and one of the reasons I've frequently seen quoted is their expectations.
Another view for expectations is perspective.
I was thinking about that this weekend when my brother's football team finished 4(wins)-5(loses)-1(tie) and didn't make the championship game.
I set high expectations often, and it can lead to unhappiness.
I sat back after the weekend, though, and thought about it.
Most of the players on my team were 1st years, so they're younger than other teams
We had some challenges at the start of the playoffs and were 1(wins)-4(loses)
Now, think about that.
We're a younger team to begin with.
We started the playoffs with a 1(wins)-4(loses) record.
We finished 4(wins)-5(loses)-1(tie), which means for the second half of the playoffs we were 3(wins)-1(loses)-1(tie), which is awesome!
Look at that perspective shift and how much better it'd make you feel.
A group of young boys overachieved playing against older mens and went 3(wins)-1(loses)-1(tie) in their last five games.
Damn, as a coach, that makes me happy and proud— Job well done!
As I think about it, it makes me realize something.
Expectations are based in fiction.
They're based in thought and not necessarily the real world.
Perspective is based in reality.
It's based on the facts and circumstances and analysis of what actually happened.
As a logical person, I want to spend more time in perspective than I do expectations.

It's hard.
It isn't easy to realize when we need to have perspective.
By the time we realize it, it's often too late and we're already frazzled.
Perspective, like a lot of things we talk about, starts with stepping back and putting space between our feelings and the facts.
Heck, even as I type that, I think about conversations we have at work, where some people complain about certain things based on how they feel.
What I often talk to them about is getting the data and making their decision based on facts not feelings, which I guess is what I'm talking above, above.
Step back
Get the facts
Analyze reality
Analyze your feelings
Make your decision from here
Let's not ignore our feelings, they matter.
Feelings matter. There is often a reason we have them, so don't ignore them.
But, don't let them guide everything without analyzing facts and reality.
Often, in the work situation, once we do these steps, we realize we're in a much better place than we feel we are and we keep moving forward.
Anyhow, next time you're feeling down, and it ties to expectations you may have had, take a step back.
Gain perspective and move forward confidently, based on facts, logic and analysis.
