How to Build Your “Get Sh!t Done” Muscle
The key to consistency isn’t motivation—it’s discipline.
Discipline is like a muscle. The more you train it, the stronger it gets.
Start Small. Win Big.
Pick an activity and commit to it every single day, at the same time, in the same way.
Example:
Wake up at 6:15 AM and put a checkmark in a notebook.
Do this for 30 days.
Once you complete the challenge, you’ll prove to yourself that you can follow through.
Level Up Gradually
Here’s how you can go from a couch potato to a fitness beast in six months:
Month 1 – Put on your running shoes.
Month 2 – Walk around the block.
Month 3 – Walk 1 mile daily.
Month 4 – Walk 2 miles daily.
Month 5 – Walk 3 miles daily.
Month 6 – Walk 5 miles daily.
By the end, you won’t just be healthier—you’ll be unstoppable.
The Power of Streaks
Streaks are the easiest way to redefine your identity.
Runners run.

In 2021, I was out of shape when a colleague pointed at my belly and laughed: "You’re not a runner."
That week, I started a running streak.
I ran every day for 1.5 years.
I averaged 4.5 miles per day.
I lost 40 pounds.
I completed a 50-mile ultramarathon.
The lesson? You are whatever you repeatedly do.
How to Stay Consistent (Even on Tough Days)
There will be days when you don’t feel like showing up.
That’s why you need systems, not just willpower.
1.The 2-Minute Rule
Commit to just two minutes:
Run for two minutes.
Write for two minutes.
Read for two minutes.
Once you start, you’ll likely keep going. The hardest part is just starting.
2. Set a Minimum Baseline
Make your streak manageable.
For example, my running streak was 5 miles/day, but my “bare minimum” was 1.5 miles.
Some days, I’d run 1.5 miles at 11:30 PM, take a break, then run again after midnight—keeping my streak alive.
3. The Two-Day Rule
If you miss one day, that’s fine.
Just don’t miss two in a row.
This keeps momentum alive, even when life gets busy.
Success is Exponential, Not Linear
Most people expect slow, incremental growth.
But consistency leads to exponential results.
In 2024, one of my client reached 40,000 Twitter followers by year’s end.
He set a stretch goal of 75,000.
The actual number?
207,000.
The takeaway?
At first, progress feels slow.
Then suddenly, it explodes.
Keep going long enough for it to go fast.
Embrace the Suck
Everything is hard before it’s easy:
You will suck.
Then you’ll be bad.
Then you’ll be good.
Then you’ll be phenomenal.
When I started as an accountant, I sucked. 4 years later, I was a CFO.
When I started training for triathlons, I sucked. Two years later, I finished an Ironman.
When I started writing online, I sucked. 15 months later, I built a thriving audience.
Give yourself permission to suck long enough to get good.
