A story that shows it's never too late to succeed
One of my favorite stories to come out of the Olympics.
It got me thinking about other famous examples of people who succeeded in their field later in life:
Vera Wang entered fashion at 40.
Harlan Sanders founded KFC at 62.
Alan Rickman got his first film role at 46.
Bill Withers released his debut album at 33.
J.K. Rowling published "Harry Potter" at 32.
Toni Morrison published her first novel at 39.
Julia Child published her first cookbook at 50.
Samuel L. Jackson got his breakout role at 46.
Remember: There's no one-size-fits-all timeline for success.
How to make rapid progress in any area of life
Sahil Bloom's 30-for-30 Approach:
Research shows that it takes roughly a month to build a new habit.
By using this method, you'll pretty much guarantee two things:
You'll make surprisingly large progress on your goal
You'll have built a new habit by the end of it
The most underrated social skill - How to listen like a therapist
Want people to remember you forever?
Build your listening skills.
I know, it doesn't sound exciting, but this is how you leave a lasting impact on people.
I'm a fan of Chris Williamson's Law of Inverse Charisma:
Rather than trying to make yourself seem interesting, focus on making other people feel interesting.
True charisma is making others feel charismatic.
What are your default rules for life? - Twitter thread
A few of my favorites from the thread:
"The first breakup should stick."
"Pee before you leave."
"Don’t trust anything about how you feel about your life after 9:00 pm."
"Judge people by how they treat staff like waiters and Uber drivers, not by how their boss talks about them."
A few of my own rules:
Never sacrifice sleep for work.
If something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
Always get to the airport 2 hours early.
Listen more than you speak.
If you wouldn't say it to a friend, don't say it to yourself.
Reply to this email with your best default rule for life, and I'll give it a rating out of 10 (😉).
